Hi Maria,
this is something to be aware of, and you should always be paying attention to where your food comes from, especially if you are expecting or breastfeeding, and for children.

Food supplement manufacturers are aware of this issue, though, and reputable suppliers pay close attention to avoiding heavy metals in their products.

Hi Jacqui,

Broadly speaking, there are three problems -
The first is that developing nerve tissue, and several enzymes, in the developing brain are dependent on adequate supplies of iron.
The second is that anaemia affects the ability of the blood to carry oxygen, which means that maternal anaemia can result in lower levels of oxygen, with the obvious effects on the development of the brain.
Finally, if you are anaemic, this is often a sign that your diet is likely to be generally short in essential minerals and vitamins, so there are likely to be other problems.

As I'm sure you're aware, not only are you "eating for two" (in terms of nutrients, not calories), but also your blood becomes more diluted whilst you are pregnant, making it especially important to get plenty of iron.

Here's a list of some papers which explore the issue - I hope they're helpful.

Can you please point me to the source of your claim that aneamia in pregnancy leads to brain problems in the baby? I am pregnant, and aneamic, and have never found any suggestion of this in all the research I have done.

Otherwise a very interesting and worthwhile read, thank you :)
